LibrAIry: The Reference Manager Built for Real Academic PDFs
As a researcher juggling hundreds of papers, I grew frustrated with traditional reference managers consistently failing on older scanned PDFs, conference proceedings, or documents without DOIs.
So I built LibrAIry — a local-first desktop application designed for the messy reality of academic collections.
Beyond reference management: AI that actually reads your papers
Most reference managers stop at organising citations. LibrAIry goes further — it lets you work with your literature.
Select a set of papers and ask LibrAIry directly: "What are the main methodological differences between these studies?" or "Summarise the key findings on synaptic plasticity across my collection." The AI reads the full text of your PDFs and answers in context.
Need a literature review draft? LibrAIry can generate a structured synthesis across multiple papers — organised by theme, with citations — giving you a solid starting point rather than a blank page.
Summaries, comparisons, gap analyses, or simply understanding a paper you don't have time to read in full: these are tasks that used to take hours.
Key Features
Smart Metadata Recovery — Most reference managers rely solely on embedded PDF metadata or DOI lookups. When those fail, LibrAIry goes further: it reads the document itself using built-in OCR and AI to extract title, authors, year, and abstract — even from scanned papers.
Privacy-first by design — Run AI entirely on your own machine with Ollama, or connect your own API key. Your research data and unpublished manuscripts stay under your control.
AI Chat & Synthesis — Ask questions across selected papers or generate structured literature review drafts automatically.
Portable & Open Formats — All data stored as standard JSON and BibTeX in your local folders. No lock-in, no mandatory cloud sync.
Available as a free 30-day trial — no account required.
If you've ever spent 20 minutes fixing a citation a tool got wrong, LibrAIry was built for you.

⚠️ A note on AI and critical thinking LibrAIry's AI features can save considerable time — but AI can occasionally misinterpret findings or produce inaccurate statements. Always read the original articles and apply your own judgment. Think of AI as a powerful assistant that helps you work faster, not a substitute for your expertise.
